Retired Teachers in Jiangsu Marched against Wage Cut

(Broadcast on December 13, 2002)In the morning of December 11, about one hundred retired teachers staged a sit-in outside the city government in Pizhou, Jiangsu Province, protesting against the government’s decision to cut local subsidies (Note) in their wages. An official from the Pizhou Education Authority confirmed to me the protest of the retired teachers.

"Trying to get by" -- 400 Wanbao miners strike against wage arrears

(Broadcast on December 9, 2002)On December 6, 2002, fire swept through the No.7 Shaft of the Wanbao Coal Mine located in Taonan City, Jilin province. Thirty miners died in the accident. Four days earlier on December 2, over 400 miners from the Wanbao Coal Mine No. 2 Shaft launched a strike to press management to settle wage arrears. The father of one of the striking miners gave me a detailed explanation of the situation.

Shandong Teachers on Strike over Wage Arrears

(Broadcast on 2001-11-21)On the morning of November 21, 2001, all 160 or more teachers from the Qing Yun Number One Middle School in Xintai city, Shandong province went on strike over wage arrears. Over the previous two years, a total of five months' wages had not been paid. A local citizen familiar with the situation telephoned the CLB hotline to report the incident.

Village School Explodes

At least 41, and possibly up to 60 primary school students and three teachers died in a fireworks explosion at a school in Fanglin village, Wanzai County, Jiangxi Province.
